MMX --> MMXI...

Seven things from the end of 2010...

1. I found the most amazing ceramic travel mugs ever.

2. When you ask God about leaving somewhere and going somewhere else and the Scripture in your devotional reading that immediately follows the prayer  is Jeremiah 42, you stay put.

3. For the first time ever, the baby girl is ringing in the new year without Mom and Dad in the same room.  Sigh... She is an amazing young lady, and we are so proud of her.

4. Our boys, for all their playing and silliness, are noble young men.

5.  Twenty-three years go by fast, and it's hard to remember life before.

6. Extended family is a huge blessing.

7. Bloggy, Facebook, and Twitter friends make life so much fun!

Have a great 2011!  Much love and many blessings to all!

Christmas Letter 2010...

Merry Christmas!  Happy New Year!  We are excited to share with you the happenings of our little family in our annual Christmas letter New Year's letter.  In case you haven't been following this blog all year, here's a wrap up...

The Kiddos:

Kelsey finished her sophomore year in stellar form.  Can't begin to tell you how proud of her we are.  She worked her brain into a frazzle and walked away from the 2009-2010 school year with straight A's.  Even in math.  And especially in AP Biology.  Over the summer she went on her first out-of-the-area mission trip, to Islamorada, FL, where she worked with kids at VBS.  She had a blast. She returned to school this fall for the infamous junior year and decided she needed more activities for her college resume.  Those new activities included:  varsity volleyball, student leadership team, yearbook copy editor, morning devotional leader, junior prayer group leader, powderpuff football team, FCA leadership, and volunteering as a Sunday school teacher in the children's ministry at church. She was selected to attend the ACSI leadership conference, which was a big deal or there is no way we would have let her miss three days of APUSH and AP English.  There were probably more things she did than those, but we are still a little traumatized from the fall activity overload.  This spring she takes the SAT and two AP exams.  Oh my!  We still start the official college visits too.  She has her favorite (probably as a result of her dad's brainwashing... "Hark the Sound" was his lullaby of choice for the kids), but we are encouraging her to keep an open mind as she seeks the Lord's will for her life. Oh yeah, she got her driver's license, too.

Zane also finished the 2009-2010 school year with straight A's.  Goodness, it's a good thing Jimmy's their dad.  They get all their smarts from him. :)  During the spring, Zane discovered his track event:  hurdles.  It took a little convincing, but the coaches finally let him run hurdles in a meet, and he blew up the competition.  We were all a little amazed; Zane may have been the most amazed.  He spent the summer...um...relaxing.  This fall Zane started high school, which has brought about a number of changes, not the least of which was the fact that he had [a lot of] real homework every night.  Football season brought a new JV head coach, a starting position for Zane on offense, and a lot of playing time on defense too.  The team did great, finishing 8-2, and the coach did an "excellent" job teaching the guys about excellence in all areas of life.  Zane, also, is on the student leadership team at school.  After football season, Zane took the classroom portion of Driver's Ed, and we are waiting for the call from the driving school about when he will do his road work.  This summer Zane had his first job, mowing Gramma's lawn.  He's learned a ton about working hard and saving money.  Zane's most interested in anything to do the the military, whether it be video games, History Channel documentaries, or books.  He especially loves learning about World War II.

Zack is in third grade this year, and he has a super-fun teacher.  We knew it would be a great fit when we walked in during open house and the room was decked out in a beach theme.  She does a great job of motivating the kids.  Zack has done very well this year, and much to his mom's delight, is writing essays.  He's always been a storyteller, but now he's branching into writing.  He's found a couple of book series that he likes, and he's read us out of house and home. Zack opted out of sports this past year, and we didn't push it as it was all we can do to get his older brother and sister everywhere they had to be.  But this spring is his time to shine.  He is trying to decide between running in a youth track and field program or playing flag football in a local league.  Like most nine year olds, Zack LOVES building with Legos.  For Christmas this year he got three large sets, and by Tuesday he had put together all three by himself (well, he had a little help from Zane on the last one, which doesn't work quite the way it was advertised... imagine that). Zack is our little daredevil, learning how to skimboard this summer and sledding like a champ this winter.  He loves riding his bike and is definitely our outdoor kid.  He was all about being in the pool this summer, until a bee landed on him in the water.  That pretty much ended the pool season for him.  The ocean, on the other hand, is his favorite.  He would be in the water from sunrise to sunset if we would let him... and if sunrise and sunset weren't feeding time for sharks.  He can tell you all about sharks and pirates and privateers and knights and aliens and dinosaurs.

The Parentos:

Norma survived teaching mainly middle schoolers last year and moved up to teaching mainly high schoolers this year.  Of course a move up in age level also meant a move to half-time from full-time.  It was a little bit of a surprise at first, but it has turned out to be a huge blessing.  The Lord's provision has been incredible, and we are grateful.  Teaching mainly writing classes (Honors Creative Writing, Journalism, and Middle School Creative Writing) and one English class (tenth grade College Prep) has made life busy with four preps and lots of writing to grade, but it's also been a ton of fun.  Five of her middle school students were selected for publication as part of a national competition.  Three of her students (one middle school and two high school) were winners in NaNoWriMo.  We hosted the church's high school summer Bible study this year, and it was a blasty blast.  For the first time, it was co-ed and we fed the kids before the study.  It was sort of like hosting a night of Meta once a week.

Jimmy continues to work for Medtronic and loves helping people.  He has some great folks on his team who have become good friends.  He's also been blessed to build friendships with some of the doctors in his territory.  His favorite part, though, is helping the patients and their families understand the devices they receive.  Well, that and the selling part.  He really likes sales too.  We are so blessed in the place where the Lord has called Jimmy to work.  Jimmy was able to help coach Zane's football team again this year, which was a lot of fun (understatement) for him.  The new head JV coach is the guy who was Zane's first football coach when Zane played city league in third grade. Jimmy and Coach C have a shared football history and can talk for hours about lineups and plays and such (trust me on this one). With an increase in job responsibilities and ministry as a volunteer football coach, Jimmy has taken a leave of absence from being a deacon.  We are still serving in student  ministry by being support for the junior Sunday school class teaching team.  Jimmy is praying about additional opportunities to serve, but at this stage in life and in our family, we need great wisdom to know where to direct our time and resources.

Speaking of time and resources... yes, we still have the condo at the beach.  It was a particularly needy real estate investment this year, as several major systems saw the end of their lifespan.  :-/ But as always, the Lord provided.  Boy are we grateful for the emergency fund Dave Ramsey made us save!

That's a few high spots for 2010.  We hope the year has been a huge blessing to you and that you enter 2011 full of love and joy and peace and hope.

May the Lord bless you bigger than you can ask or imagine!

Love,

Jimmy, Norma, Kelsey, Zane, and Zack (and Pepper too!)

Happy birthday, Zany Brainy!

You are an amazing young man, and we are so proud of you!  From the start you have been a knight in shining armor... it's just who you are.  We love you, Zane!

Cousins...

We really have to get together with these guys more.  We live only 5 miles apart.  And they are so much fun.

Stellar gifts...

There were lots of great Christmas gifts in our house this year, and I LOVED everything my sweet husband went on a treasure hunt to find for me, especially the CS Lewis books, the TOMS, and my gnome and hedgehog charms.  The new camera scares me, but in time I will love it and use it.  I promise.  It takes me an average of four months to adjust to a new electronic device.  I don't know why.

Mom gave us something totally unexpected and totally WONDERFUL:  a new trashcan.  Not just any trashcan--this one has an automatic lid.  Snazzy.  We took the old trashcan and made it our indoor recycling bin. They fit perfectly, side by side, at the end of the bar in the kitchen.  I love, love, love it.  Thanks, Mom!

Christmastide...

What stinks about Christmas is that we roll everything up into one big day.  Now, I love December 25 as much as the next mom, but what I REALLY love is December 26.  Why?  Because it is the first day we can relax and enjoy.

I probably wouldn't enjoy December 26 so much if I had to take down all the decorations by then.  I don't think I'd enjoy the whole week-between-Christmas-and-New-Year's time nearly as much if I hadn't been raised to extend the Christmas season all the way through Epiphany (January 6).  I can't remember a single time when we took the decorations down before January 6. Sometimes we didn't even take the down until Valentine's Day, but that's another blog post. :)

Whoever started the whole tradition that it's bad luck to go into the new year without taking down  Christmas decorations was just nuts.  Everyone knows:  a) there's no such thing as luck, and b) if there were, it all hinges on eating collard greens and black-eyed peas (the food, not the group) with a shiny dime under your dinner plate on New Year's Day. Not that we would ever do all those things in our family...

What was the point of this?  Oh yeah, Christmastide.  Back in the day when everything wasn't riding on December 25, there was a whole season of feasting and gift-giving.  You didn't have to get it all over with in a couple of days; you had twelve days of Christmas to see all the family and friends you wanted to see and find excuses not to see those you just couldn't tolerate.

December 25 was the first day of Christmas.  December 26, the second.  December 27, the third. December 28, the fourth.  December 29, the fifth (Yes, I am going to write all these out.  Then you'll have a handy guide each day to know what "day" you're on.) December 30, the sixth.  December 31, the seventh.  January 1, the eighth.  January 2, the ninth.  January 3, the tenth.  January 4, the eleventh. And January 5, the twelfth.  On January 5th, you'd be having a Twelfth Night feast.  And on January 6, you'd celebrate the Feast of Epiphany.

Since I wasn't around in previous centuries... other than the one immediately before this one, which had already switched to the December 25 system of celebrating... I don't know if you were allowed to have leftovers from the Twelfth Night feast at the Epiphany feast. It's not really an issue around here, as we have teenagers and no matter how much I cook, there's never enough food left over to make another meal for the entire family.

Jimmy's got Christmastide off from work this year.  Well, he's off until January 3, which is when we go back to school anyway.  We're going to attempt to maintain a festive atmosphere here through January 6. I'll let you know how that goes.

In the meantime, we'll have New Year's dinner (or our eighth night feast) at Gramma's.  We only need five more maids and eight cows to make it work.

Christmas with Ralph Waldo Emerson...

From the essay "Gifts"...

For common gifts, necessity makes pertinences and beauty every day, and one is glad when an imperative leaves him no option, since if the man at the door have no shoes, you have not to consider whether you could procure him a paint-box. And as it is always pleasing to see a man eat bread, or drink water, in the house or out of doors, so it is always a great satisfaction to supply these first wants. Necessity does everything well. In our condition of universal dependence, it seems heroic to let the petitioner be the judge of his necessity, and to give all that is asked, though at great inconvenience. If it be a fantastic desire, it is better to leave to others the office of punishing him. I can think of many parts I should prefer playing to that of the Furies. Next to things of necessity, the rule for a gift, which one of my friends prescribed, is, that we might convey to some person that which properly belonged to his character, and was easily associated with him in thought. But our tokens of compliment and love are for the most part barbarous. Rings and other jewels are not gifts, but apologies for gifts. The only gift is a portion of thyself. Thou must bleed for me. Therefore the poet brings his poem; the shepherd, his lamb; the farmer, corn; the miner, a gem; the sailor, coral and shells; the painter, his picture; the girl, a handkerchief of her own sewing. This is right and pleasing, for it restores society in so far to its primary basis, when a man’s biography is conveyed in his gift, and every man’s wealth is an index of his merit. But it is a cold, lifeless business when you go to the shops to buy me something, which does not represent your life and talent, but a goldsmith’s.

I was a junior in high school when I first read this essay.  I loved it.  Still do.

Seven inches of snow = snow cream without sticks and leaves...

Can you believe that I've never made snow cream before?  I had such great memories of my mom's and my Grandma B's snow cream that I didn't dare try.

But the local bigtime TV station tweeted a link to recipes, and I thought:  surely I can't screw it up THAT badly. So I made it, and it was awesome.

Here's the recipe I started with, and then I just kept adding more and more of each ingredient until I had enough snow cream for six. (Kelsey's BFF got snowed in with us.)

1  cup milk/cream
1/2  cup sugar
1  tsp vanilla extract
5-6 quarts of snow

So far we've built a snow bug, had a snowball fight, and made snow cream.  Time for a snow nap.

Jesus is the light of the world...

As the angel choir withdrew into heaven, the sheepherders talked it over. "Let's get over to Bethlehem as fast as we can and see for ourselves what God has revealed to us." They left, running, and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger. Seeing was believing. They told everyone they met what the angels had said about this child. All who heard the sheepherders were impressed.

Mary kept all these things to herself, holding them dear, deep within herself. The sheepherders returned and let loose, glorifying and praising God for everything they had heard and seen. It turned out exactly the way they'd been told!

Confession...

After the exploding turkey debacle of Thanksgiving 2010, we had a HoneyBaked ham for Christmas.

And all through the house...

Confession...

It makes me twitchy for the red and white pegs to get all mixed up in the Battleship bins.

Confession...

One of my favorite sounds in the whole world is the sound of our kids laughing as they hang out together.

Love is in the house...

... is one of my favorite TobyMac songs.

It summarizes how we're feeling right now.  Today is our 23rd wedding anniversary.  I love Jimmy wayyy more than I did 23 years ago, and I am confident that 23 years from now I will love him wayyy more than I do today.  I am amazed at how our Lord knits hearts to Him and to each other.  It is one of the miracles of Love.

We didn't have a chance to go away for the whole weekend as we had planned earlier in the year.  The weather forecast as a little iffy for wintry weather.  So instead last night we had a romantic late-night dinner at one of our favorite restaurants near home.  Then today (our actual anniversary) we drove to CB and spent the day there, just the two of us.  We watched the sun set and the moon rise.  We walked over to the freezing cold beach and shared a few sweet minutes under the full moon before we had to jump in the car and head home.  On the way out, we toured the Islands of Light.  So us, don't you think?

Confession...

Snow day here.  Hooray!

The first thing I always think when the power goes out is:  Hey, let's watch movies in the dark.

The first thing I thought when I found out school was canceled today:  Hey, now I can run to the mall and finish up Christmas shopping.

This being the South, I'm about as likely to get in a car and drive somewhere during a "wintry mix event" as I would be to get the TV to work during a power outage.

I love flawed logic.  It usually means I'm going to get to take a nap.

Second Sunday in Advent: Thursday Edition...

For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
   Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
   Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Isaiah 9:6

It doesn't have to be perfect.  It just has to be.  Jimmy traveled to corporate HQ on Sunday for a business meeting, so we had to find the perfect night when everyone was back home to light the second candle.  That night was tonight.  Still sweet to read God's Word together as we ponder the immensity of God sending His only Son.  Incarnation.  Amazing.  Grace.  Amazing Grace.

Pumpkin spice all-stars...

I do love some pumpkin spice anything from October through December.  I love it enough to have a list.  Here are my top five pumpkin spice favorites:

#5:  Pumpkin spice cream cheese.

I know; I know.  Sounds like the grossest thing you could imagine, and I thought it would be.  I was pleasantly surprised that it was actually good.  Pair it with a nice whole wheat bagel.  Mmmmm...

#4:  Pumpkin Pie Spice creamer by International Delight

There's also a Pumpkin Spice creamer by Coffeemate, and it will do if there's nothing else around; but Pumpkin Pie Spice is truer to pumpkin pie flavor without tasting so chemically.

 #3:  Pumpkin spice trail mix

Who would've dreamed that they could make trail mix flavored with pumpkin spices, but they do and it works.  Very well.  Go ahead on over to Target and get you some.

#2: Pumpkin muffins

Yeah, I'm noticing a trend too.  All these pumpkin goodies are available at Target.  My world is small.  Yet Target's pumpkin muffins are incredible.  After the Pumpkin Czar announced that the pumpkin dearth of '09 might continue into '10, I was a little scared the muffins might disappear.  Thankfully, the supply increased and everything was fine.  Breathe deeply.  It's OK.

#1:  St. Arbucks' Pumpkin Spice Latte

If you know me at all, you know PSL's from St. Arbucks taste like sipping a pumpkin pie through the little hole in the lid.  It is my favorite of the season.  I love PSL's.  Somebody needs to make me a t-shirt that says that.  Add to PSL season the times I get to have one with a friend and you have my #1 favorite favorite.

It's a most wonderful time of the year...

Sunday evening we lit the first candle of the season. I love our family Advent devotions.  We talked about hope, and each of us shared some things we're hoping for.  Then we paused to thank Jesus for laying down heaven for a time to rescue us so that we can have genuine hope.  Amazing.

Wednesday we started our Advent calendar for daily family devotions.  This year we're using an Advent garland that Zack made in school.  I was still looking for the perfect Advent calendar over the weekend; I found one in the Advent box in the attic, but I had a feeling that it probably wasn't as gospel-centered as I'd hoped.  I even posted as one of my 10 things to do this season that I wanted to find a gospel-centered Advent calendar.  I figured I'd hit all the bookstores on Tuesday afternoon when I had some time.

And then... guess what?  (You know God is in the details, right?) Zack came home with a craft he had done in school: a green and red and white paper chain printed with Old Testament and New Testament verses that "demonstrate how the prophecies of old came true with Jesus' birth."

I love the directions that follow:  "You may want to allow your child to find and read the verses, being ready to offer assistance on how each verse fits into the traditional Christmas story.  May God bless your family's time together as you prepare for this season of Advent."

After devotions, Zack heads to bed and we sing 3, okay 4, Christmas songs.  Meanwhile downstairs, we hang out with Kelsey and Zane.  What a blessing, indeed!
